Carbon Footprint Insights from The Color Run Night

What happens when you mix running, color, and a bit of eco-consciousness? You get The Color Run Night in Bucharest, with Carbon Tool as the Sustainability Partner, to help understand the event environmental impact while keeping the fun going.
This year, we partnered with The Color Run in Bucharest to calculate the carbon footprint of all the fun. With 8,500 participants running through color powder clouds and enjoying the night, we were there to measure the environmental impact and share some easy-to-understand insights.
Carbon Footprint Breakdown
The total carbon footprint for The Color Run Night came in at 82.063 tCO₂e. But what does that mean? Let’s break it down so it’s easy to understand:
• Event Materials (48.95%): The largest contributor to the footprint was the materials used for organizing the event, from the color powders to merchandise and accessories.
• Commuting (35.22%): Getting everyone to and from the event, whether by car, bus, or other modes of transport, made up the second-largest contributor of emissions. We conducted a survey where participants were asked to provide details about their mode of transportation and the distance traveled to the event.
• Food & Beverages (15.22%): The snacks, drinks, and all the food needed to fuel the runners played a role in the event's carbon footprint.
• Electricity (0.57%): The stage, lights, music, and all the energy used to keep the party going took up a small share of the total emissions.
• Waste (0.05%): The waste emissions were minimal, thanks to the recycling efforts, which helped significantly reduce the environmental impact of waste.

What Does This Mean for Each Participant?
We didn’t just measure the overall footprint; we broke it down so each participant could see their own impact. Each runner added 9.7 kg CO₂e to the total footprint. But what does that really look like? Let’s compare it to something familiar:

Pretty cool, right? It’s all about understanding the environmental cost of the activities we enjoy!

Ways to Offset the Event's Footprint
To demonstrate the possibilities of reducing the event’s environmental impact, we explore two great options:
1. Planting 3,197 trees: Trees help absorb CO₂ over time, and planting that many would completely offset the event’s emissions in one year.
2. Solar Panels: Alternatively, installing 703 m² of photovoltaic (PV) panels would provide clean energy production to balance out the emissions in one year.
Final Thoughts
We’re proud to be part of this event, helping everyone become more aware of their impact and offering ways to reduce it. By providing insights into how our actions contribute to the environment, we can all take small steps towards a more sustainable future. Carbon Tool helps businesses and organizations do just that, to measure, manage, report, and reduce their carbon footprint.
