Global Warming

No measurement, no reduction

No measurement, no reduction

Many organizations say they want to reduce emissions. Fewer have a system that can prove reductions are real. That gap is exactly what Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is meant to close.

MRV is not a report. It’s an operating system for decarbonization.

Why MRV matters

Budgets are limited. If you can’t identify your biggest emission drivers, you’ll spread effort thin and fund projects that feel good but don’t move the needle. MRV creates focus: measure what matters, prioritize what’s most inefficient and verify the impact after changes are made.

A practical MRV framework

  1. Measurement: build a reliable baseline. Collect energy, fuels, travel, and procurement data in a structured format. Start with the highest-impact sources.
  2. Reporting: turn data into decision-ready views. A good report shows drivers by site, business unit and category, so leaders can see where action is needed.
  3. Verification: confirm reductions after interventions. Keep measuring after changes, or you can’t separate real savings from external factors (weather, occupancy, one-time anomalies).

KPIs that make MRV actionable

·         Emissions and cost by category

·         Energy intensity (kWh/m² or per unit of output)

·         Trend lines by site and process

·         Payback logic for interventions (amortization over time)

·         Exception flags (spikes/drops that can signal technical issues)

Companies often do “M” and “R” but not “V.” Without verification, it’s easy to claim progress while operational reality drifts back.

To start in December/January, pick one area where you can control outcomes quickly, often facilities energy or a high-spend procurement category, and run one full MRV cycle: data-decision-action-verified outcome. Then scale.
