This November, we participated at PlantFEST 2024 as sustainability partners. PlantFEST is an annual event focused on environmental actions, bringing together organizations, communities, and individuals to create a positive impact on the planet. With a commitment to reducing emissions by carbon sequestration, PlantFEST is leading by example in the fight against climate change.

 

Together with DEKRA Romania, we supported PlantFEST in calculating the event carbon emissions and analyze the long-term offsetting capacity of the activity, ensuring that every aspect of the event contributed to a greener future.

 

What Was the Event's Carbon Footprint?

 

We measured the carbon emissions from organizing PlantFEST event and here’s what we achieved:

 

     • 12,612.5 kg of CO₂ emissions were generated.

     • 1,350 participants joined this green initiative.

     • 25,000 trees were planted to help absorb the event’s emissions and more.

 

 

How Does Tree Planting Activities Lead to Offsetting Carbon Emissions?

 

Planting trees is one of the best ways to fight climate change. Trees absorb CO₂ emissions as they grow, by storing it in their trunks, roots, and soil, and returning oxygen in the atmosphere. We’ve carefully planned for potential challenges, like a 97% survival rate for the trees and considered the acclimatization period before they can start absorbing CO₂. These details ensure the project’s success and make sure the environmental benefits are real.

 

In the first 4–5 months, the saplings will acclimatize to their environment and grow strong enough to start absorbing CO₂. By August 2025, the trees will have absorbed the equivalent of all the CO₂ emitted in organizing the planting activity, meaning the PlantFEST event will become carbon neutral. By December 2025, the trees will have absorbed twice as much CO₂ emissions as the planting activity produced and start contributing to a cleaner and greener world.

 

 

A Long-Term Impact

 

PlantFEST’s trees won’t stop at offsetting this year’s edition emissions. As they grow, their impact on the environment grows as well, absorbing larger  quantities of CO₂ emissions each year. To make it easier to visualize, these are the values for offseting capacity, compared with the carbon footprint of the planting activity:

 

By 2030, the trees will have offset 29 times the event’s emissions—equivalent to neutralizing the CO₂ emissions from a diesel car journey circling the Earth approximately 15 times.

By 2034, this number will grow to an astounding 65 times—equivalent to neutralizing the CO₂ emissions from a diesel car journey circling the Earth approximately 22 times.

 

This shows how a single event can make a long-lasting, positive impact on the planet.
